Hanks cottage and the Hanks family

Archive Notes:

The two photos show the back of Hanks Cottage, 1 Crown Square in the late 1950s.

Tthe roof is still thatched, and the level of the eaves has not yet been raised; it is thought that the thatch was removed very late 1950s, or maybe early 1960s.

Lorne described the structures as follows:

In photo 2733-01 the open fronted shed (left part of the house) was where Gran (Ellen Hanks) did the food preparation on a large marble slab. The back door opened into this structure.   On the far end of the lean-to (so to the left) was a very rough brick built structure with a tiled roof containing a toilet and a bath. The structure in the right foreground is an old stables/cart shed, as shown on the c. 1960 map, see record 1969. This was an old stables and cart shed, there was a small door in the wall of Farm Close Lane for putting in the fodder. The stables were a stone structure whilst the cart shed's wall which abutted it was of wooden boarding, it must at one time have been open on that side.  And through the drive, to the right, you can see the end of the cottages on Louse Hill, see record 986. There appears to be only a small separation between the two. Tthe people around the table, clockwise from front left to front right, are: Julian Hanks, Peter Hanks, Ian Dungey, Eileen Dungey (Hanks), little girl from next-door cottage

In 2733-02 the people are Julian Hanks, Ann(e) Hanks, Ian Dungey (now standing), Eileen Dungey (Hanks), little girl from next-door cottage.

In the mid to late 1950s - George Hanks (senior, d. 1963) and Ellen Hanks (nee Stringer, d. 1957) are still living in Hanks Cottage. Ellen has probably already died before these photos were taken. Eileen Dungey (Hanks) was George and Ellen's only daughter. Eileen married George Dungey, and Ian Dungey is their son. At this time George and Eileen and Ian were living at No.3 The Croft.

George Hanks (not in photos), known as "babe" Hanks, was one of George and Ellen's sons; George (junior) married Ann(e) May; their three sons are Lorne, Julian and Peter. At this time George and Ann(e) and Lorne, Julian and Peter were living at No.1 The Croft.

After George Hanks (senior) left Hanks Cottage, Jack and Amelia Hanks moved into Hanks Cottage, presumably sometime between 1957 and 1963, when the changes probably took place to the cottage.
