Photos and text on Wheatley Morris Men and may pole dancing

Did you know that children no longer dance around the Maypole at school? Some might say ‘does it matter? The Wheatley Society thought it did and, judging by the response to its Mayday celebrations, so did many others.

But Maypoles are getting scarce these days, and by the time we eventually found one, there was little time to practise. The children may not have known the dances, but they made up for this with their enthusiasm.

Although the dances were hardly traditional, we at least set the Maypole up on the “Green” and had the Morris Men dancing there. With their help everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and that’s what it’s all about.
