The Wheatley Society
In June 1977 The Wheatley Society's Local History Group mounted a jubilee exhibition including investigation of the censuses of 1851, 1861 & 1871. There is mention of a Freindly Society in existence in 1825. Sheldon's memories are that this operated as a welfare group with members being entitled to sick pay or a doctor if they were ill.
It included Land Tax Assessments from 1789, the hard copies of these for that year and also 1785, 1799 and 1802 are shown below. It appears that the Whalley Smythe Gardiners are not shown until 1799.
