The Chequers Inn

Archive Notes:

Information about The Chequers Inn including the memories of Wilfrid Sheldon of Wheatley's Friendly Society held there. Apparently, this existed as far back as 1825 but Sheldon's memories are that this operated as a welfare group with members being entitled to sick pay or a doctor if they were ill. This was a fore-runner of the welfare state in that it helped out people with sick pay and other 'benefits'.

It closed as an inn in 1910 and the writing was on the wall at the time of licenced renewal in 1908.
