Established in the Merry Bells in the 1930s, it moved to The Red Lion in 1954. Immediately prior to this, Cullum's yard (i.e. Hathaways) became vacant and following negotiations with the owners the yard was purchased for £6000 and full planning approval obtained for a New Club building on the site. Halls Brewery came to hear of this and when advised of our plans to move to new premises suddenly decided to sell the freehold of the existing premises.

There were twenty founder members, among them Roy’s father, George Davis, Frank Dallimore, Ron Cox, Vic White, the butcher, Charlie Shepherd, and P.E.D.Addis who was regarded as ‘Wheatley gentry.
