Born in Wheatley and baptised on 5 October 1891, son of William and Emma Yates. He was attending Wheatley Elementary school in 1904 and went on to the Night School in 1905. Brother of David Yates. His name appeared on the Roll of Honour carried in the Oxford Times of 26 September 1914 as having enlisted in Kitchener's New Army. Serving as a Private in 1916.
